Overview

CURRICULUM AND PURPOSE OF THE COURSE

 

The course leading to the award of the degree of Bachelor of Science in Leather Science and Technology provides a scientific avenue for training skilled personnel in various aspects of the leather subsector. Members of this profession are considered to be important catalysts for industrialization. They are responsible for provision of valid and reliable leather information on which important decisions are made that affect the livestock industry and the leather subsector.

In order to achieve  some of the Millennium Development Goals, human resource training is an important part of the capacity building strategy for the leather subsector.

The implementation of the undergraduate programme in Leather Science will contribute to the development of human resource required to offer extension, research and training, technical and business development services in the leather industry.

The objectives are:-

  • To produce human resource with technical expertise in Leather Science and Technology.

To contribute to capacity building of the service providers in the leather industry.

Structure

Course structure and Duration:

The Degree course shall consist of Units;comprising lectures,practicals,demonstrations,seminars,field and industrial training/attachment,Research project and examinations.The programme shall be offered via two modules;full time (Module I and II) and through Open Distance and Electronic Learning (ODeL) (Module III).

FULL-TIME:

i. A candidate shall take a minimum of 4 academic years and a maximum of 8 academic years.

ii. Each academic year shall be divided into two semesters each, except during the third year of study which will have a third semester.

iii. Each semester shall consist of 15 weeks inclusive of teaching and examinations, while the third semester shall be 8 weeks.

iv. A candidate shall be required to undertake training and complete all the course work and practical assignments that are prescribed for the Bachelor of Science In Leather Science & Technology 

v. A candidate shall be required to take a relevant Field Attachment during the third semester at the end of the third year of study and Industrial Training and Attachment in the First Semester of the fourth year of study. The candidate shall identify the institution(s) for attachment, which shall be approved by the Faculty Projects and Attachment Committee.

vi. During the third semester of the third year and first semester of the fourth year of study, a candidate will be required to develop a research project proposal relevant to any field of Leather Technology. The project proposal shall be executed and a technical report submitted for examination to the Faculty Projects and Attachment Committee, at least six weeks before the end of the final semester of study. A candidate shall be expected to consult their supervisors while developing and executing the project proposal and preparing the technical report.

  • Schedules of Intake:

  • The intakes for both Undergraduates and postgraduates students is scheduled for September every year.

Applicants must fulfill any one of the following minimum qualifications:

  1. A C+ in KCSE or equivalent with at least a C (plain) in Chemistry, and any one of the following subjects; Biology or Biological Science, Physics or Physical Science, Agriculture or Mathematics
  2. A C- in KCSE or KCE Div. III or equivalent plus a Certificate and Diploma a relevant field from an institution recognized by the Senate
  3. ‘O’ level Division II or equivalent with the subjects indicated above; plus a Diploma in a relevant field from an institution recognized by the Senate
  4. Diploma in Leather Technology or relevant field from the University of Nairobi or institutions recognized by the Senate and a mean grade of C in KCSE or equivalent
  5. A’ level with two principal passes or equivalent in Chemistry, and Biology, or Physics or Mathematics, or Geography
  6. Higher National Diploma in Leather Technology, Laboratory Technology or relevant field from institutions recognized by the Senate and a mean grade C in KCSE or equivalent.
  7. Bachelor of Science degree in a biological science from a recognized institution
  8. Equivalent qualifications to the above from institutions recognized by the Senate

Exam Regulations

The general examination regulations of the University of Nairobi and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine shall apply.

6.2     The course shall be examined by continuous assessment tests and a final examination. The continuous assessment tests shall constitute 20% of the final marks and the final examination shall constitute 30% of the mark.

6.3     The final examination shall comprise a 2-hour written examination and a 3-hour practical examination. The practical examination shall constitute 50% of the marks.

6.4     The pass mark shall be 50%.

6.5     A candidate who fails in the final examination may re-sit the failed course(s) when next offered upto 2 times subject to payment of the prescribed examination fees.

6.6     A candidate who fails in the second re-sit shall be discontinued.

6.7     The examination shall be moderated by an External Examiner with qualifications acceptable to the Board.

6.8     The cumulative performance in the programme shall be summarized in the average score over100 and a grade give as follows
